Because the Landmark Pay Equity Law is 15 years old, the Biden Administration is adding a new measure to it. With this new step, the pay gap between federal employees and federal contractor workers would be closed.
When it was signed into law in January 2009, the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act said that any change in pay because of discrimination was against the law. Even though this was signed years ago, women and men still make different amounts of money. Biden says that American women who work outside the home can make an average of.84 cents for every dollar that a man would make in the same job.
As Vice President, Joe Biden signed The Fair Pay Act with Barack Obama. When Lilly Ledbetter started working at Goodyear, she found that she was being paid less than a man who did the same job. This led to a case in the Supreme Court, which is what made this bill possible.
The new action’s details will be made public on Monday, according to Joe Biden. He said it “will help pay millions of workers fairly, close gender and racial wage gaps, and yield tangible benefits for the federal government and federal contractors.”
It’s time for the next step. To get there, the Office of Personnel Management is working on a new rule that would make it illegal for government institutions and contractors to decide on a new employee’s pay or salary based on how much they were paid in the past. It’s possible that this decision will help stop pay discrimination and make sure that people are paid based on their skills.
The Federal Acquisition Regulatory Council wants to make a new rule that would stop federal contractors and subcontractors from using workers’ past salaries to figure out how much they should be paid in a current government job. There was also a suggestion that the pay should be written on the job postings themselves.
“Help federal contractors recruit, diversify, and retain talent, improve job satisfaction and performance, and reduce turnover,” say people in the Administration.
Many government officials agree that the pay gaps have made things better, but they also know that more needs to be done to close them fully.
