El Paso To Issue New State Of Emergency As Border Facilities Hit Capacity Ahead Of Title 42 Expiration

Because of the influx of migrants from Mexico before Title 42 expires on May 11, El Paso, Texas, announced a new state of emergency on Monday.

Mayor Oscar Leeser issued a warning, saying that when the US eliminates the federal pandemic-era policy that has permitted officials to send millions of people back to Mexico, his border city may crumble under the weight of thousands of migrants seeking assistance.

According to Leeser, the declaration, which is expected to last 30 days, will request more funding from the US government to provide both shelter for the asylum seekers and security for the entire community.

The federal government has already given $22.5 million to the city.

During a press conference on Sunday, Leeser stated, “The reason we’re declaring a state of emergency is to make sure we can stand up and prepare for May 11. To make sure we have public shelters, public housing… and two schools in place.”

With recent local data suggesting more than 1,000 migrants are arriving at the border each day, this will be the second instance in six months that an emergency has been declared in the struggling city.

On May 11, officials anticipate that 10,000 to 12,000 migrants would attempt to cross the border in search of asylum, Leeser added.

Leeser, who has long lamented the situation at the US-Mexico border, continued that only temporary shelters will be provided in El Paso as the city assists asylum seekers in traveling to the destination they intended.

CBP authorities have issued a warning that the number will increase in the upcoming weeks. As of late April, there have been around 7,000 encounters every day.

In addition to the need for assistance, Leeser urged the government to significantly change American immigration and border regulations in order to reduce the influx of people crossing the southern border.

Leeser emphasizes that there is no clear solution to the current issue at hand, and that the only hope for a solution is for the federal government to change federal laws. He pointed out that the process to fix this problem has been flawed for many years and needs to be addressed. Without intervention from the federal government, the city and the country are unable to move forward.

Without Title 42, the US will return to its long-standing practices that were established during the United States’ enormous immigration, including legal consequences for those who repeatedly attempt to cross illegally.
