Gunman Who Fatally Shot 23 Shoppers In El Paso Gets 90 Life Sentences, May Still Face Death Penalty

The gunman responsible for the racist attack on Hispanic shoppers at a Walmart in Texas, which claimed the lives of 23 people, has been sentenced to 90 consecutive life sentences on Friday.

Patrick Crusius, aged 24, pleaded guilty to nearly 50 federal hate crime charges earlier this year, making it one of the largest hate crime cases in the U.S. government’s history.

During the court proceedings, Crusius appeared in a jumpsuit and shackles, showing no reaction as the verdict was read. The judge recommended that he serve his sentence at the ADX Florence maximum security prison in Colorado, known as the most secure facility in the U.S. prison system.

Relatives of the victims had the opportunity to address Crusius in court, expressing their grief and the devastating impact his actions had on their lives.

Raul Loya, a relative of a victim, tearfully stated, “I hope God one day finds the heart to forgive you for what you’ve done.”

Another victim, identified only as G.A., directly addressed the attacker, saying, “I still remember everything so clearly, even though I have tried to erase it from my memory.”

Thomas Hoffman, who lost his father Alexander in the attack, called Crusius an “ignorant coward” and expressed his belief that the gunman deserved to suffer in jail and face eternal damnation.

Hoffman described his father as a “gentle giant with a big heart” and condemned Crusius as an “evil parasite.”

Throughout the victim statements, Crusius remained mostly impassive, occasionally shifting in his seat or nodding his head.

On Thursday, his eyes appeared to well up as victims condemned the brutality of the shootings and demanded that he respond for his actions. However, Crusius chose not to answer and consulted with his defense attorney.

Crusius’ family did not attend the sentencing proceedings, and he was led from the courtroom while a family member of one of the victims shouted at him from the gallery.

Although federal prosecutors removed the death penalty from the table after Crusius pleaded guilty in February, Texas prosecutors plan to seek the death penalty in his state trial. A date for the trial has yet to be determined.

Before the sentencing, Joe Spencer, Crusius’ attorney told the judge that his client had a “broken brain.”

“Patrick’s thinking is at odds with reality…resulting in delusional thinking,” Spencer claimed.

The sentencing marked an important moment for the victims’ families to confront Crusius and express the profound impact of the tragedy on their lives, with some choosing to forgive while others demanded justice.
