Early Monday, authorities initiated the evacuation of homes as a precautionary measure following a train derailment outside Philadelphia.
The incident occurred in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, when a 40-car CSX Norfolk Southern freight train derailed shortly before 5 a.m. Emergency crews swiftly responded to the scene located in Whitemarsh Township, a suburban area.
Approximately 15 to 20 of the derailed train cars were transporting hazardous materials, prompting a Level 2 hazmat response, as reported by Fox 29.
To ensure the safety of the public, officials decided to evacuate nearby residences and businesses. At the present time, there is no identified hazard affecting the public.
Photographs captured at the scene depict multiple cars toppled off the tracks, with visible signs of bending.
“Precautionary evacuations have occurred at the residents and businesses closest to the scene. It is not believed that further evacuations will be needed, but we will evaluate as we know more,” Whitemarsh Township police said in a statement.
Representatives from Norfolk Southern, CSX, and the Montgomery County Department of Public Safety’s Emergency Response Team promptly arrived on-site to assess the situation and coordinate response efforts.
Fortunately, no injuries have been reported thus far, according to officials overseeing the incident. As investigations continue, the cause of the train derailment remains unclear.
As a result of the incident, Joshua Road has been temporarily closed between Flourtown Road and Stenton Avenue, as instructed by local law enforcement.
