Police Swarm Capitol Hill After ‘Concerning 911 Call’

The U.S. Capitol Police responded to potential security concerns on Wednesday afternoon at the Russell Senate Office Building in Washington D.C.

The authorities received reports of a possible active shooter, which led to a lockdown and evacuation.

“US Capitol police responding to a report of a possible active shooting near/around the Senate building. Over 50 police cars including DC police, Capitol Police, K9s, and many officers with long guns,” the Citizen Free Press reported.

The incident unfolded just before 3 p.m. ET after a concerning 911 call prompted the Capitol Police to respond immediately.

“Due to a security threat inside the building, immediately: move inside your office or the nearest office; take emergency equipment and visitors; close, lock and stay away from external doors and windows,” and “If you are in a public space, find a place to hide or seek cover,” among other directions,” read the alert a Senate staff received from USCP before 3 p.m. EST.

They urged the public to stay away from the area while they investigated the situation. Updates have been shared to keep everyone informed.

“Our officers are searching in and around the Senate Office Buildings in response to a concerning 911 call. Please stay away from the area as we are still investigating. We will continue to communicate with the public here,” the Capitol Police announced.

Details are still unclear, but Fox News reporter Adam Sabes suggests that the situation might be related to a “mental health” crisis rather than an active shooter.

“DC Fire and EMS tell me that the situation at Russell Senate Office Building is likely a “mental health” situation and not an active shooter.” Adam Sabes said.

While evacuations were taking place at the Russell building, security remained vigilant at the Capitol building itself, though it was not under lockdown at that time.

As the incident happened during the August recess, most lawmakers were away from the Capitol.

However, some staff members were present in their offices on Capitol Hill, although the overall occupancy was likely lower than usual during this period. Despite this, authorities took immediate precautionary measures to ensure everyone’s safety.

The Capitol Police are diligently securing the area and thoroughly investigating the reported concerns. As more information becomes available, further updates will be shared with the public.
