Trump Meets With Fox Execs About Debate

Former President Donald Trump, known for his unconventional approach to political campaigns, is once again creating a buzz as he reportedly considers sitting out the first primary debate for his potential 2024 presidential run.

This is not the first time he has contemplated such a move, having skipped debates during his previous campaigns.

However, this time around, he has been engaging in talks with Fox News, a network that has played a significant role in his political journey.

The catalyst for these discussions was a recent development that caught the attention of many: an indictment handed down by a federal grand jury on August 1, marking the third time Trump has faced such a situation.

Following this news, the former president hosted a dinner with Fox News executives at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey. While this dinner was prearranged and not specifically tied to the indictment, the timing has sparked interest.

At this dinner, Trump met with Fox News CEO Suzanne Scott and President Jay Wallace, addressing the topic of the upcoming primary debates that the network will host.

Despite his past criticisms of the network, the dinner was described as cordial, with a source indicating that Trump’s attacks on Fox News were put aside during the meeting.

During the conversation, Scott and Wallace reportedly encouraged Trump to reconsider his previous statements about skipping the first debate.

They appealed to his confidence, highlighting his strong performance in previous debates, where he often clashed with fellow candidates and moderators. This approach seemed to resonate with the former president, who expressed that he would take their appeals into consideration.

Trump’s spokesperson, Steven Cheung, has remained tight-lipped about the details of the dinner, referring to it as a “private meeting.” However, it’s clear that the discussions have touched on a sensitive topic, given Trump’s mixed feelings about participating in debates.

In a recent interview with Breitbart News, Trump acknowledged the pivotal role that debates played in his 2016 Republican nomination victory and his subsequent triumph over Hillary Clinton in the general election. Still, he voiced his concerns about dealing with what he perceives as a “hostile network.”

“I haven’t totally made a decision. I like the debates. I might be here because of the debates. I might have won against Hillary with the debates and I might have gotten the nomination because of the debates,” Trump said.

“But when you’re leading by 50 and 60 points against these people, and you have people at zero, and 1 and 2—and then they’re going to be asking me hostile questions and they probably won’t have much of an audience if I’m not in the debates according to what I read,” he added.

“If I’m not in the debates, then they’re not going to have a very big audience. It seems almost like it would be foolish to do them.” Trump continued.
