Zelenskyy Appears to Issue Veiled Threat to Europe

In what most people believed would be a swift takeover of Ukraine, Russia moved troops across the border more than 18 months ago.

Certainly, Russian President Vladimir Putin did not anticipate a protracted battle after he swiftly annexed Crimea in 2014. He reportedly thought Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s administration would swiftly fall.

Zelenskyy and his supporters would get a lot of help from the US and Europe, something Russia did not account for. In support of the disadvantaged country, Americans and Europeans donated hundreds of billions of dollars in aid.

Zelenskyy seems to have threatened Europe because he is concerned that as the war drags on, his allies are losing interest in standing by him.

Zelenskyy recently had a conversation with the Economist. It covers a wide range of subjects, including the potential for Europe to stop delivering or scale down aid to his nation if the situation escalates into a long-term conflict.

The comedian turned world leader added that those that cut off help would be siding with Russia, by saying, “And if partners do not help us, it means they will help Russia to win.”

The Ukrainian president also made a strong assertion that appeared to be a threat during the conversation.

He asserted that cutting off or suspending help to his nation could lead to issues for Western countries in their own backyards. If these countries abandoned their homeland, he claimed there was no way to predict how the millions of Ukrainian refugees living in Europe would behave.

Zelenskyy noted that his people are mostly “well-behaved” and “grateful” to the countries that provided them with refuge during the conflict.

He appeared to be implying that Ukrainian refugees would resort to violence if they felt abandoned, but cautioned that it wouldn’t make for a “good story” if European nations “drive these people into a corner.”

Even though everyone agrees that Ukraine is fighting on the right side, the public’s will to support the war effort seems to be waning. After a slew of natural disasters hit the US, citizens began to question why their government was so ready to provide aid abroad.
