China Finds Workaround for 5G Chip Embargo

The United States failed in its attempts to stop China from producing certain 5G chip technology.

Amid this global microchip battle, China announced successful production of a 5G smartphone using an advanced silicon chip on a scale of miniaturisation, analysts revealed.

Huawei has developed a 5G-capable smartphone that is powered by a cutting-edge standalone chip that was exclusively made using technology that was viewed with suspicion by the majority of Western nations.

This achievement was made possible despite the Biden administration’s broad sanctions against China in October 2022, which prohibited the sale of specific chips and manufacturing machinery to the nation.

The business’s Mate 60 Pro phone is powered by a Kirin 9000S chipset that was created in major part by a semiconductor company controlled by CCP.

Although it is not the first 5G smartphone to be produced in the country, it is the first device to include a chip made completely of local Chinese components.

Before the Biden administration’s restrictions were put in place, stockpiles of microchips that were obtained internationally and used to build prior 5G-capable cell phones. Greater sanctions were not implemented until 2022, but there were already certain limitations on the export of related technology from the United States as of 2019.

It is thought that the United States has embarrassed itself internationally by allowing China to avoid restrictions initially and then outright penalties later. The developments were described as “a slap in the face” of America by an analyst for TechSights, a company that tracks semiconductor research.

One publication praised China’s most recent announcement as an amazing “feat” of “innovation” in the global tech sector. The fact that Huawei’s chip-manufacturing method was earlier seen as “impossible” because they had access to “restricted” American technology is what Medium refers to as Huawei’s “groundbreaking” new capability.

A different source claimed Huawei’s success shows the U.S. trade war with China has failed “without a doubt.”

Chinese social media users and state media went crazy when the phone was released.

Researchers claimed that it’s possible that Huawei bought the technology and tools needed to produce the chip from SMIC rather than working together.
