White House Creates New Anti-Gun Office

President Joe Biden has announced plans to create a groundbreaking Office of Gun Violence Prevention inside the White House.

The new office, which will report to Vice President Kamala Harris, will be led by Stefanie Feldman, a seasoned policy advisor to President Biden on firearms matters. Advocacy groups that have long pressed the president to establish such an office have applauded the decision.

President Biden asked Congress to take action and restated his support for reasonable policies like background checks for everyone and limitations on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.

He stressed the importance of finding a solution to gun violence, which has torn apart families, communities, and the nation as a whole.

This institution’s establishment is closely tied to the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act of 2022, a landmark measure hailed as the most comprehensive gun violence prevention strategy in 30 years.

This plan gained traction in the wake of the tragic shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, which left 19 students and 2 teachers dead.

Greg Jackson, executive director of the Community Justice Action Fund and a gun violence survivor, and Rob Wilcox, senior director of federal government affairs at Everytown for Gun Safety, will serve as the office’s deputy directors.

Biden took the move in response to a recent rule proposal that would have mandated government licenses and criminal background checks for for-profit gun sellers. The administration has additionally implemented executive orders into effect; such as the March executive order aiming to strengthen background checks.

In addition to the president’s efforts, Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut and Representative Maxwell Frost of Florida introduced legislation in March to create an Office of Gun Violence Prevention inside the Justice Department. Murphy praised the White House’s decision, pointing out that it would enhance how the federal government implements the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act and possibly save lives.

Gun violence continues to cause a lot of concern in the US.

The preliminary data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revealed that the rate of homicides using firearms was 5.9 per 100,000 last year and is presently at 5.22. The Office of Gun Violence Prevention was established to address this pressing issue and promote safer communities around the nation.
