Former President Donald Trump recently expressed his commitment to assist in the selection of the next House speaker after Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) was removed from the position.
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) initiated a successful motion to remove McCarthy from the speakership, receiving support from all House Democrats along with eight Republicans. The final vote on Gaetz’s motion resulted in a 216-210 tally, as reported by the Washington Examiner.
Following this motion’s success, Kevin McCarthy is no longer the House speaker, and the race for the speakership is now contested between Reps. Jim Jordan (R-OH) and Steve Scalise (R-LA).
Several House Republicans have suggested the idea of nominating Donald Trump to become the next House speaker. Rep. Troy Nehls (R-TX) has pledged to nominate Trump for the role, highlighting growing support from fellow Republicans.
Nehls stated, “Many America First Patriots support my nomination of Donald J. Trump as the next Speaker of the House.”
One of the Republican supporters of Nehls’ proposal to nominate Trump for House speaker is Rep. Greg Steube (R-FL). He expressed his belief that Trump is the singular figure who can unite conservatives, emphasizing that the former president embodies the “America First” agenda needed in the House of Representatives.
“We need somebody to unite our conference. And I honestly believe that he’s the only person that can do that,” Steube said. “We need the America First agenda to be displayed in the House of Representatives.”
However, Trump has indicated his primary focus remains on his third presidential run, highlighting his strong position in polls against President Joe Biden and other GOP candidates.
“I am running for President, have a 62 Point lead over Republicans, and am up on Crooked Joe Biden, despite the Democrat Party’s massive Law-fare, Weaponization, and Election Interference efforts, by 4 to 11 Points,” Trump said.
“I will do whatever is necessary to help with the Speaker of the House selection process, short term until the final selection of a GREAT REPUBLIC SPEAKER is made — A Speaker who will help a new, but highly experienced President, ME, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” the former President added.
