Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a California law in September that would ban carrying firearms in most public spaces, and was to take effect January 1st.
However, a judge on Wednesday blocked the law saying that it violates the Second Amendment and that people would not be able to protect themselves or their families.
The law itself would prohibit people from carrying guns in 26 places including public parks and playgrounds, churches, and zoos, to name a few. The ban would also apply to everyone whether they had a license or a permit to carry a firearm or not.
The only way that businesses would be able to get around this would be for private businesses to put up signs that allowed firearms into their businesses.
The US District Court Judge Cormac Carney blocked the law saying it was “sweeping, repugnant to the Second Amendment, and openly defiant of the Supreme Court.”
Although the court case will continue against the law, experts say that gun groups are sure to prove the law unconstitutional, making it prohibited completely.
Newsom isn’t giving up now and this is just the beginning of his fight to stricter gun laws.
“Defying common sense, this ruling outrageously calls California’s data-backed gun safety efforts ‘repugnant.’ What is repugnant is this ruling, which greenlights the proliferation of guns in our hospitals, libraries, and children’s playgrounds — spaces, which should be safe for all,” the governor said in a statement Wednesday evening.
The controversy continues as many say that there are lots of issues with the law such as gun holders driving through a prohibited area and breaking the law, or people not being able to protect themselves when they need to. On the other hand, others argue that having guns where families gather is a grave concern.
This is a continuing debate but it seems that Newsom isn’t giving up on stricter gun safety measures in accordance with our current constitution.
