Border crossings into the US have been busy lately, especially at the southern border. Migration has been happening in big places like New York City and Atlanta, and one mayor is starting to notice a pattern in the crimes that are happening there.
When asked about the trend of thefts by migrants, New York City Mayor Eric Adams said at a press conference on Tuesday. He meant this as a “robbery pattern” and said that some immigrants had broken the law since they came to New York City.
His next words are, “There are criminals in every walk of life.” People who aren’t refugees or travelers are also affected. There is a belief that everyone has done wrong, including people who live in New York and people who came to live there.
Some of the refugees I think we have have done bad things. A lot of people who aren’t refugees are breaking the law, he said.
He went on to say that he didn’t want anyone to get the wrong idea and that the people of New York who weren’t refugees were also guilty of crime. They saw a “robbery pattern” in the crimes, and he said that they did find that some refugees were involved in that pattern.
He said, “But remember what I said last week. Some of it was the city’s fault.” Being in a place where someone can’t work or take care of themselves is punishable. For the whole day, they have to do nothing. What a bad situation that is.
In the place where they can’t take care of themselves, he says, people are left to do what they have to do. Along with the expected effects on crime in some places, the rise in migrants can have many other effects on the outside world.
It looks like Adams is looking for more help and resources because New York is expecting another wave of migrants in the next few months.
