Hearing aids have been linked to lower death rates in studies?!

It was found in a new study that people in the U.S. who regularly use hearing aids are less likely to die.

These results show how important it is for people who need hearing aids to be able to get them and for them to be simple to get. According to the World Health Organization, 7 million people will need hearing aids because of hearing loss by 2050. According to Dr. Frank Lin, head of the Cochlear Center for Hearing and Public Health at Johns Hopkins, everyone will lose their hearing at some point. He said, “It’s inevitable.”

Hearing loss is mostly caused by loud noises and the natural loss of hearing that comes with getting older.

One study looked at 10,000 adults and tracked 1,700 of them who had hearing loss. Only 13% of those people regularly wore hearing aids. After 10 years, they looked at the same adults and found that regular hearing aid users died less than people who didn’t use hearing aids or didn’t use them regularly.

This led to the idea that hearing aids may help keep people from dying. Janet Choi, an otolaryngology-head and neck surgeon, said, “I’ve always been very interested in how hearing loss affects a lot of health outcomes, and I also wanted to find out if hearing aids can change that.” Hearing loss was present at birth, and she began using hearing aids as an adult.

This finding makes us worry about how easy it is for Americans to get hearing aids. It’s not a one-time cost because hearing aids need to be updated every few years and can cost up to $4,500 A pair. Of course, this isn’t always possible for some Americans, and most of the time, it’s also not covered by insurance.

Choi talked about some other problems with giving people hearing aids. She talked about treating patients who needed hearing aids but didn’t think they did yet.

There are many people who come to her with hearing loss and trouble communicating, but they don’t want to try hearing aids. They say things like, “I don’t think I’m there yet” or “I don’t want to look old.”

She also says that hearing loss is the most ignored sign in basic care, which is one reason why many people don’t know they have it or understand what it means until they are told they do.

The studies can’t say for sure why hearing aids are linked to living longer or having a lower death rate, but this link needs to be looked into to learn more about how it can affect people.
