It was just recently said that one of the biggest pet blood banks in the US abused animals and sold blood from “emaciated, medicated, elderly, sick, and injured” animals.
A report came out after a secret detective was sent into the building, which is called the Veterinarians Blood Bank in Indiana, and found some shocking information. After the results were made public, investigators are now looking into this.
Dogs and cats are being mistreated at the Veterinarians Blood Bank in Indiana, where many of them are kept there for life to be donors. The blood they give is also dangerous for dogs and cats. Dan Paden, vice president of PETA, said, “Our investigator saw staff draw blood from animals that were sick with cancer and other infections. Sometimes, the blood was taken a week before the animal died.”
PETA gave pictures and movies of the animals inside the facility as well. There were 860 animals at the facility, and pictures and vids showed dogs that were hurt. A worker said that the boss paid her $200 for taking in two stray cats, and some dogs were given terrible surgeries like debarking surgery.
A lot of people think that most donor sites only keep animals for a short time so that they can do their job and then get adopted. PETA said that animals that go to the VBB will have their blood drawn every three weeks for the rest of their lives.
They started VBB in 2002. Their names are Ron Harrison and Darren Bryant. Harrison didn’t say anything, but Bryant did say that dogs do get hurt in fights, but they are taken care of right away. He didn’t say if they draw from sick animals or not.
When asked about the small problems the inspector found, Bryant said that the building only has 500 instead of the 860 that was said. “If our animals are not healthy, people are not going to buy a blood product from us,” he said about animals that donate blood that is sick. He went on to say that they should “just live here” if they are too old to give. Life isn’t bad. They work out every day, and every day their pens are cleaned.
Inspectors are being sent into the building to look into the claims that are being made. This is being looked into by investigators. The state hasn’t been to this facility in about 6 years, according to the report.
This isn’t the first time that pet blood banks have had problems with how they treat the animals and how long they keep them there. However, the whole country needs to take more action to regulate pet blood banks.
