China’s Belt and Road Initiative Failed Because of Corruption?!

The Foundation for the Defense of Democracies says that China’s Belt and Road Initiative may not have worked as well as planned compared to its goals.

The Belt and Road Initiative was first started in China 10 years ago. The goal of this infrastructure effort was to link up several emerging markets and connect Asia to other European countries.

President Xi Jinping started the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in 2013. Its main goal was to have the same kind of economic and cultural effects on the area as the Silk Road did. China had high hopes for this program, but the report said it hasn’t lived up to those dreams.

“Getting Tighter or End of the Road?” A study called “China’s BRI at 10” broke down how the BRI has changed things in China. The BRI program has caused a lot of trouble in society, the economy, and the government, according to the study. A lot of people don’t like the program because it has a lot of abuse.

Case studies from the Dominican Republic, Zambia, and Ecuador were used in the report to show that China was getting a lot of bribe money for the Belt and Road Initiative. What the report basically says is that the BRI “failed to live up to its intended goals” and the money that was put into it is not being seen in the BRI.

Josh Birenbaum, one of the authors of the report, said, “Unfortunately, productive assets were built with one hand while vanity projects were built with the other. Poor cost projections and risk planning led to infrastructure that wasn’t needed or was of poor quality, and unclear loans at market rates made debt problems worse for countries that could least afford it.”

Some people also say that China isn’t open about how they spend the money they get for these kinds of programs, which makes it harder to believe that they’re using it for what it was meant for. The study says that many other countries were left with “high-profile, low-quality projects that impressed domestic audiences in the short term but were often unnecessary, poorly thought out, or badly constructed.”
