A man was recently caught in California for smuggling greenhouse gases, which is the first time someone has ever been charged with this crime.
There have been many cases of smuggling, including drugs and other illegal items. However, this is the first time that someone has been sued and charged with smuggling greenhouse gases under the 2020 U.S. law, which aims to phase out powerful greenhouse gases.
Michael Hart, 58, from San Diego, California, got the gases in Mexico and started bringing them into the US across the border. After, he sold them on the Internet on sites like OfferUp and Facebook Marketplace.
The law was about chemicals like hydrofluorocarbons, which are 10,000 times more powerful than carbon dioxide and are used in air conditioning and refrigeration. They are very bad for the climate.
According to the charge, he “talked with co-conspirators in Mexico to make plans to buy HCFC-22 and other refrigerants, as well as with buyers in California.” Hart agreed to plead guilty to 13 charges. He could get anywhere from five to twenty years in prison. David Uhlmann, who runs the office of the Environmental Protection Agency, said, “This is the first criminal case for HFCs being brought into the country illegally.” It’s not the last time.”
In addition, “we expect there to be many cases along the southern border,” he said. “There could be cases near the border with Canada.” And because we might not be able to stop every illegal shipment, there will be cases in towns and places across the U.S. until we make it clear that we will not tolerate anything.
