Apple has started their first big round of cuts since the pandemic. The very large tech company said they would be letting go of 600 workers in California.
This is not the first time we’ve heard that Apple is letting people go. They told these employees in different offices about the layoffs before, and they will be official at the end of May. The workers are from eight different Santa Clara offices, but the sections have not been named.
Apple said at the start of the year that they were scrapping their multibillion-dollar plans to make an electric car. Because of this, leaders told their workers that they were switching their focus to AI instead.
Apple had planned to make both an electric car and a fully self-driving car, but the electric car was shelved because of problems with missing deadlines, staff change, and not being able to make a product that would work. The company that makes iPhones told workers that they would be let go and that this part of Apple would be phased out.
It’s not the first time a tech company has cut jobs and areas. Microsoft, Amazon, and other companies have also let go of a lot of employees. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been a lot more layoffs. Many companies decided to do this at the beginning of the year and at the end of the year.
Many businesses have let go of employees in different areas of their business to make way for an AI sector. This is because of the push toward AI and a change in business direction. Besides these things, businesses are also trying to cut costs wherever they can after the pandemic.
