Connecticut lawmakers don’t get anywhere with AI rules

It was hoped that Connecticut lawmakers would be able to pass one of the first big bills that would stop racism in AI when the legislative season started. But the bill didn’t go through because Democratic Governor Ned Lamont threatened to block it. He said they were worried that the law would “stifle innovation” and make Connecticut stand out.

For about two years, Democratic Senator James Maroney has worked on this problem with politicians from all over the United States. Maroney said, “It’s too bad that Connecticut is missing out on the chance to be a leader in AI.”

Several bills were put forward at the same time as the AI bill, but they all failed when the General Assembly’s deadline came and went. There were some good things that came out of this.

The law made it clear that the General Assembly made many changes to nursing homes, such as not letting new residents live in rooms with more than two beds.

The Senate also looked into the rise in the number of flavored drinks sold in convenience shops. They also decided against putting synthetic cannabinoids in cannabis and against selling them in stores that are licensed to sell cannabis.

Senator Rob Sampson, a Republican, spoke out against the bill and said, “I don’t think it goes far enough.” He talked about what took place in Bridgeport, calling it a “fiasco” that called for strong action.

The legislation came up a lot of ideas that were not used and failed. However, some of them were accepted, like the plan to spend more than $300 million in leftover pandemic funds.

This is why Republicans didn’t want to open the pandemic fund again. “You didn’t have as many choices when we agreed not to open the budget and not do a budget,” House Speaker Matt Ritter said.

Vince Candelora, the minority leader in the House, said, “The Democrats didn’t do their job on the budget, and they gave the governor the tough choices.”
