Facebook Deals Massive Financial Blow To Russian State Media As War Rages On

Russian state media’s advertising and monetization of content is now prohibited on Facebook.

Facebook has prohibited any Russian state media from advertising on the platform.

According to Nathaniel Gleicher, Facebook’s director of security policy, Russian state media are now forbidden from placing adverts or monetizing content on the company’s platform, adding that the new limitations apply globally.

Gleicher said in a tweet that Facebook would continue to classify Russian state media.

“We are now prohibiting Russian state media from running ads or monetizing on our platform anywhere in the world. We also continue to apply labels to additional Russian state media. These changes have already begun rolling out and will continue into the weekend,” he said.

Gleicher also stated that Facebook is actively monitoring the situation in Ukraine.

Facebook’s decision to exclude Russian state media from advertising and monetizing on the platform comes only hours after Twitter declared it would suspend all advertising in Russia and Ukraine.

“We’re temporarily pausing advertisements in Ukraine and Russia to ensure critical public safety information is elevated and ads don’t detract from it,” Twitter declared.

Both statements coincide with the third day of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
