Sanitation Worker Rescues Missing Elderly Woman

Everybody has a hero in their life, whether it’s their mom, dad, friends, teachers, or even strangers.

Macario Chism, a Waste Pro Sanitation employee in Caruthersville, Missouri, made a pit stop at a convenience shop on one of the coldest days in January. There is a possibility that Chism was a regular customer, as the cashier was eager to tell him about a recent Silver Alert. An incredible act of heroism ensues, which was rarely reported on outside of Missouri and Arkansas until the very end.

Thus, it is chosen as the Feel-Good Friday tale for this week.

Macario Chism was in a convenience store at 7 a.m. when the clerk informed him that Thelma Bates, an 82-year-old dementia sufferer, had been given a Silver Alert.

The cashier said, “Hey, there’s a woman in her 60s or 70s.” Chism remembered thinking, ‘She’s gone.’

Chism bolted from the establishment.

Since 3 a.m., Mrs. Bates has not been seen or heard from. She was barefoot and it was 16 degrees outdoors. ‘I was worried ill,’ Marian Bates, Thelma Bates’ eldest daughter, said. Community members from all walks of life joined in the celebration.

While driving his garbage truck, Chism was among the first responders searching for the missing girl. KNWA News in Fayetteville, Arkansas, quoted Chism as stating,

“I’ve got to track down that lady; she’s either frozen to death or I’m going to have to locate her.”

A few blocks from Mrs. Bates’ house, Chism observed something odd about a little metal backyard shop structure that he was intrigued about.

After the shop door had swung open and closed due to the wind, Chism found her lying on the floor of the store. “She rose to her feet and then sank back down.”

Before he could reach Mrs. Bates, Chism jumped over a ditch and dashed across two backyards. In the truck, Chism removed the coat he was wearing and covered Mrs. Bates’ feet with it. He then climbed into the cab and started the engine. Footage taken from the dashboard camera of Chism’s truck shows him putting Mrs. Bates inside and taking care of her. A quick touch of his horn alerted others that he had located her and needed help.

While looking for her, he was thinking about his deceased grandma and how much she meant to him.

Chism remarked, “She died in my arms.” In the end, “I couldn’t save her, so I was just pleased to save Mrs. Bates.”

Comforting Mrs. Bates were the first responders on the scene. They then transported her to the hospital, where she had a medical evaluation. Despite the cold and exposure, she was in perfect health save from a few scratches and bruises. The only reason why Chism was able to find her was that he was so determined and fast to respond and care for her when he finally did.

Caruthersville Code Enforcement Officer Barry Gilmore says that “he was taking his time, he was paying attention, and he located her and saved her life.” “I couldn’t be more pleased with him.”

Chism received a hearty welcome from the Bates family a few days later. For his “caring heart,” he received the Gr8 Acts of Kindness award. First Community Banks and KAIT News were the main sponsors of the prize.

One who cares, but also a savior. Unlike his grandmother, Chism was adamant that Mrs. Bates would not meet the same end as his aunt. He was able to give another elderly person a second shot at life because of that tragedy. The Bates family does not doubt that they will be eternally thankful.

We salute Chism’s courage and selflessness. Even if today’s heroes don’t appear like your conventional heroes on the big screen, what counts most is their desire to help those in need.
