Tons of electric-car charging stations across the United States are reportedly having major reliability measures.
Researchers revealed that the number of electric-car charging stations in the US is growing rapidly. However, many aren’t working with more than 25% of public DC charging stations in California’s Bay Area being unusable.
In the recently published study about the public electric-vehicle stations in California’s Bay Area, it was revealed that only 72.5% of chargers were operational.
California has been a leader in electric and hybrid vehicles for years, San Francisco Chronicle found. However, the number of operational stations shows major reliability issues.
According to the survey conducted by retired professor of bioengineering at the University of California Berkeley, David Rempel, over 657 individual charging plugs in 181 public DC fast-charging stations were tested by volunteers.
However, a total of 22.7% of connectors were reportedly non-functioning due to problems like broken plugs, unresponsive screens, network connectivity issues and payment system failures.
Meanwhile, in a separate survey of 1,290 electric-car drivers conducted by the California government agency, 44% of owners saw operability or payment issues as barriers to charging.
In February, the White House announced that the government will provide $5 billion to help the states shore up their charging infrastructure along major highways.
