New bill from Republican lawmakers will penalize Supreme Court leakers after the opinion draft on the “Roe v. Wade” case was leaked last month.
Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy from Louisiana has introduced a brand-new bill called the Stop Supreme Court Leakers Act, which would penalize any individual who leaks information concerning impending cases from the Supreme Court.
“The recent leak was an attempt to publicly intimidate justices and undermine the integrity of the Court — all while putting lives at risk,” Cassidy said in a statement. “My bill holds leakers accountable and takes away any hopes of profiting off their crimes.”
The bill would also have some heavy consequences, including a possible maximum 10-year prison sentence and a $10,000 fine.
GOP Sen. Marco Rubio, who co-authored the bill, said that Supreme Court leakers need to “face serious penalties.”
“The leak of a draft opinion of [Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health] not only undermined the integrity of our judicial system, but also continues to spur threats of violence against Supreme Court Justices and crisis pregnancy centers. This bill would ensure that leaked confidential information from the Supreme Court is a criminal offense,” the Florida senator said.
This comes after a draft opinion of the controversial “Roe v. Wade” case was leaked last month, which led to massive domestic terrorist attacks against pro-life organizations, including a pro-abortion group named “Ruth Sent Us” that gathered outside the homes of the justices.
On May 13, The Department of Homeland Security issued a warning to law enforcement authorities about a possible surge in political violence.
“We assess that the broader ideological spectrum of potential DVEs (domestic violent extremists) linked to recent abortion-related threats likely seek to target a range of individuals and entities,” the officials wrote in the memo.
Instead of putting a stop to the violent activities, however, Vice President Kamala Harris sided with the anarchists and directed the blame toward Republicans for “weaponizing” the issue.
“What is clear is that opponents of Roe want to punish women and take away their rights to make decisions about their own bodies,” she said in a statement. “Republican legislators in states across the country are weaponizing the use of the law against women.”
