Top House Dem is Being Accused of Being Involved in Bribery

Leading Democratic Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi is facing an ethics investigation after agreeing to do a fundraiser with two lobbyists linked to ousting the owner of the Washington Commanders, Dan Snyder.

The American Accountability Foundation claimed that Krishnamoorthi violated House ethics rules by agreeing to appear at a May fundraiser hosted by the lobbying duo Mike and Tom Manatos, who both have a long history of opposing Snyder.

“It’s clear that Rep. Krishnamoorthi, members of his staff and perhaps others, violated House ethics rules and the federal bribery statute by raising — and agreeing to accept — campaign donations in exchange for using the power of the Oversight Committee to investigate and permanently damage the team formerly known as the Washington Redskins at the behest of wealthy lobbyists with an ax to grind against their local sports franchise,” said Tom Jones, the president of the American Accountability Foundation.

The organization issued a letter to the House Ethics Committee on Friday urging an investigation into Krishnamoorthi’s conduct, arguing that the Illinois congressman may have broken House ethics rules and federal bribery statutes.

Snyder has been under investigation since last fall after a renewed outcry that the NFL failed to release a written report of its inquiry into the team’s workplace, along with sexual misconduct accusations made against the owner of the Commanders. Snyder has denied the claims and the NFL is conducting a separate investigation into the matter.

Krishnamoorthi joins the list of Democrats who have been suspected of bribery, most recently in the case of former Sen. K. Kalani English.

English, who pleaded guilty to wire fraud in February, arrived at court earlier this month hoping to get 30 months but the prosecutor wanted to send a message to elected officials who take bribes.

“This was not just any elected official, but the majority leader of the Hawaii State Senate with a lot of position to bargain, peddle, and sell. So having an individual like him on the other end of the bribes was incredibly damaging,” said Assistant U.S. Attorney Kenneth Sorenson.

The former state Senate Majority Leader recently came under fire after failing to report money and gifts he received in exchange for his efforts to kill a cesspool bill.
