As of late July in the Zaporizhzhia area, the Russian Defense Ministry has alleged “Zelenskyy’s Regime” of employing toxic or poisonous chemical weapons in an attack on its soldiers.
On Saturday, a message was posted on Moscow’s official Telegram channel. “The 31st of July this year. Russian troops performing their duties in the vicinity of the village of Vasilyevka, located in the Zaporizhzhia district, were transported to a military hospital exhibiting severe poisoning symptoms. The toxic chemical botulinum toxin type B was discovered in the bodies of military troops due to the examination.”
The Russian government claimed that it would hand over any proof of a chemical assault on its forces to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).
There are no known reports from troops associated with Ukraine suggesting that there has been a use of chemical warfare during Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This is true even though no known reports confirm Russia’s assertion.
To murder, maim, or disable human beings, animals, or plants by the deliberate employment of biological poisons or infectious agents like bacteria, viruses, insects, and fungus is an act of biological warfare, also known as germ warfare.
International humanitarian law and various international treaties restrict the use of biological weapons in combat. Specific legislation prohibiting the creation, acquisition, transfer, stockpiling, and use of biological weapons is the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) of 1972. As a result, the employment of biological weapons during hostilities constitutes a crime against peace. However, the BWC does not restrict biological research for defensive, preventative, or protective objectives.
How tides have turned: How long it was that it was suspected that Russia was the first to utilize biochemicals.
Jake Sullivan, the national security adviser for the White House, issued a warning in March that Russia would pay a “severe price” if it carried out an attack with chemical weapons against Ukraine. He also stated that any attack on NATO territory would result in a comprehensive response from the Western alliance.
Sullivan stated that the United States and its partners were discussing the growing potential of a chemical weapons assault closely and that they were contacting Moscow directly with Moscow to warn against any such action. Sullivan was speaking on the “Face the Nation” program broadcast on CBS.
Using nuclear weapons “would be a frightening extra boundary that Russian President Vladimir Putin is crossing in terms of his attack on international law and standards,” Sullivan added.
The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has resulted in the deaths of thousands of people, the displacement of more than two million others, and the shelling of cities surrounded by Russian troops.
