Biden drove a Corvette classic at 118 mph, as he participated in a drag race on Wednesday night’s episode of Jay Leno’s Garage.
Biden, now 79, was packed into a 1967 Corvette Stingray, which has 350 horsepower. This classic car was a father’s wedding gift.
“I was getting married in August 1967. He said that although my dad didn’t have much money, he managed the largest Chevrolet dealership in the State for many years. So, the dealership employs 75 people. They spread when we pull up. My father said, “This is my wedding gift.”
Biden swung in the race against Michael Powell (son of former Secretary-of-State Colin Powell) at Beltsville, Md.
After beating the president off the line, Powell was behind the wheel of a Corvette Stingray 2015 with 455 horsepower.
Biden held on tight as he reached 118 mph and was not far behind Powell as they came to a halt.
After Biden won the race, Leno made a joke about how “I am so in trouble,” “Uh-oh, here comes Secret Service.”
After racing against each other in season 2 of Jay Leno’s Garage, Powell won the race. The 2016 drag race was won by Biden.
Biden, a well-known car enthusiast, appeared on CNBC to promote electric cars (EVs), which are a key part of the August Inflation Reduction Act.
New incentives have been added to encourage EV use, including the Federal Government rolling out additional charging stations and tax credits for purchasing eco-friendly vehicles.
Biden also drove a 1978 Ford F100 truck that was electrified. He said it was quiet and easy to drive.
He also spoke out about the importance of EVs and called it “an answer” to financial security for automobile companies as well as a chance to do something “good.”
Leno observed, “This is the only chance you get to drive.”
Biden responded, “Yeah it is.” It’s God’s truth and I’m not seeing it.
