Senate Republicans have introduced a resolution to stop the Biden administration’s welfare-dependent immigrant crisis.
“That Congress disapproves the final rule submitted by the Department of Homeland Security relating to ‘’Public Charge Ground of Inadmissibility’’ (87 Fed. Reg. 55472 (September 9, 2022),’ and such rule shall have no force or effect,” read the resolution, which was introduced by Kansas Sen. Roger Marshall.
This comes after President Joe Biden lifted a Trump-era rule that stopped importing immigrants into America who would be reliant on the country’s welfare system.
Known as the “public charge” rule, former President Donald Trump implemented it in 2020, which made it far more difficult for foreign nationals to secure green cards if they had previously used welfare programs like food stamps, Medicaid, or taxpayer-funded housing.
“It is fair and sensible to favor prospective new citizens who will not be reliant on government benefits,” Marshall said in a statement.
This isn’t the first time that the Kansas lawmaker has fought to keep the U.S. free from millions more of imported public charges; he previously filed a similar version of the resolution in November of last year.
“DHS’s proposed public charge rules continue our country down the dangerous path of incentivizing migrants to illegally cross our southern border. Granting citizenship to illegal aliens who would be dependent on federal benefits is a burden that American taxpayers and our national debt cannot afford,” his resolution read at the time.
“The Trump Administration made it clear to would-be law breakers that they would receive no support or citizenship from the American government. We need to get back to policies like this if our country is going to have any hope at stopping the invasion at our southern border that started when President Biden took office,” it continued.
Texas Rep. Troy Nehls has also filed an identical version in the House to fight back against the public charges.
“We have millions of our own American citizens without health insurance and receiving SNAP benefits, as well as hundreds of thousands sleeping on the streets at night. Instead of making it a priority to find our own citizens homes, meals, and health insurance, Joe Biden continues to exacerbate the issue,” Nehls said.
