The Prime Minister of Haiti, Ariel Henry, has resigned because of the gang killings in the country and the calls for him to step down. Henry is in Puerto Rico right now, and he says he will officially step down as soon as he has a temporary replacement to work with.
“For more than a week, our country has seen an increase in all kinds of violence against the population, including murders, attacks on police, theft, and the systematic destruction of public and private buildings,” Henry said in a video.
The leaders of Haiti are putting together a presidential council of seven people and plan to appoint a new interim Prime Minister to lead the country. However, no information has been shared about who this person might be. “I’m asking all Haitians to stay calm and do everything they can for peace and stability to come back as soon as possible,” Henry begged the people of Haiti from outside the country.
People from gangs are almost taking over Port-au-Prince, which is the city of Haiti. A lot of people are afraid about what they can offer the gang members to get them to stop fighting and how they can do it.
Robert Fatton, an expert on Haitian politics, said, “You need to talk to the gangs even if you have a different kind of government.” “You can’t keep them down.” The government of Haiti will have to make a plan to get them to drop their guns.
Jimmy “Barbeque” Chérizier, who used to be a police officer and is now the boss of Haiti’s most powerful gang, said that if outside groups were to decide how to start a new government, it would “throw Haiti into even more chaos.”
A group of Haitian gangs broke into the city and set fire to police offices, prisons, and the capital. It’s possible that Prime Minister Henry’s departure won’t make things better with the gangs in the country.
People thought Henry’s government was crooked because they chose not to hold an election. Since 2016, they haven’t had an election.
