As temperatures rise, a controversial way to cool the Earth gains support

The Earth’s temperature has been going up, and people are still trying to figure out the best way to stop it. People have been forced to come up with ways to fight climate change because of how it affects them, and some pretty cool ideas are starting to spread.

The idea behind solar radiation modification, which is also called “solar engineering,” is to change the Earth’s warmth by reflecting sunlight into space. The White House put out a study last year that talked about this process and how they plan to figure out its pros and cons.

There is a lot of disagreement about these methods because people are worried about what might happen. We know that climate change experts have been thinking about ways to cool the planet for decades, but no tests have been done because people are afraid of what might happen. A lot of people say that we need a lot more money and scientists to be able to control this kind of experiment and figure out how it will affect weather, water cycles, and food output.

A message signed by more than sixty climate scientists in 2022 asked for a deal not to do any solar engineering at all. Because of this, many US states are thinking about passing laws that would make it illegal to use chemicals to change the weather or the amount of sunshine.

Ginger Zee, the chief meteorologist and climate reporter for ABC News, worked with two groups to look into two ways to reflect enough sunlight to cool things down. Marine cloud brightening and stratospheric aerosol injection are two of these ways.

Scientists have come up with a way to brighten clouds that is similar to what our ships do when they cross oceans. When sea salt and stratocumulus clouds come together in the right way, they can make the clouds brighter, which would bounce more sunlight away from Earth.

When sulfur is injected into the atmosphere, it acts as a reflector of sunlight, which may help lessen the effects of carbon dioxide.
