Assault Weapons Ban Passed In House Of Representatives

Legislators in the House of Representatives narrowly approved an assault weapons prohibition Friday night with a 217-213 vote.

There’s a good chance that the filibuster will prevent the bill from progressing.

Brian Fitzpatrick, R-Penn. and Chris Jacobs, R-N.Y. were two Republicans who defied their party and voted in favor of the bill. Voting against the bill were five Democratic congressmen: Henry Cuellar (D-Texas), Jared Golden (D-Maine), Vicente Gonzalez (D-Texas), and Kurt Schrader (D-Ore. ), and Ron Kind (D-Wisc).

Assault weapons prohibition legislation is supported by a majority of Americans, according to President Biden.

“The vast majority of Americans think this is a sensible course of action. Until this law reaches my desk, I will continue to fight for it in the Senate. There is no higher duty than to do all in our power to keep our loved ones, our children, our homes, our neighborhoods, and our country safe, “Biden made statement.

“To keep war weapons off the streets, save lives, and reduce crime, House Democrats came together today to support an assault weapons prohibition,” he continued.

By the bill’s summary, it would be prohibited by the Assault Weapons Ban of 2022 to “knowingly import sell produce transfer or possess a semiautomatic assault weapon (SAW) or large capacity ammunition feeding device (LCAFD).”

On May 24, a mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, left 19 children and two adults dead. Officials believe the May 14 shooting at a Buffalo, New York, Tops grocery store was racially motivated, which resulted in the deaths of 10 individuals.

In a statement on the House floor, Nancy Pelosi stated Friday that the assault weapons prohibition is long overdue.

“Assault weapons have been utilized in several mass shootings in communities around the United States. Our lovely children have been the victims of many of these mass shootings, which is very upsetting. In their classrooms, in the movies, at the malls, and in our neighborhoods. Hence, my complete support today for restoring the assault weapons prohibition, a long-overdue effort to remove dangerous weapons from our streets “, Pelosi made a comment.
