Bed Bugs Take Over Paris, Mayor Says “No One Is Safe”

French authorities have sounded an alarm about a significant bedbug infestation spreading across public areas in the city.

With the anticipation of tourists flocking to Paris for the 2024 Olympics, concerns regarding health and safety implications are mounting.

Transport Minister Clement Beaune has committed to reassuring and safeguarding the public. He has convened a meeting with public transport operators this week to devise strategies to combat these blood-sucking pests, which have been sighted in cinemas, at Charles-de-Gaulle Airport, and on public transportation.

Deputy Mayor of Paris, Emmanuel Gregoire, issued a letter on behalf of City Hall, urging Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne to take action against this concerning issue.

“The state urgently needs to put an action plan in place against this scourge as France is preparing to welcome the Olympic and Paralympic games in 2024,” Grégoire wrote.

“Bedbugs existed before and they will exist afterward,” he added.

On Friday, Gregoire described the increase in bedbugs as “widespread,” stressing that “no one is immune.” He acknowledged the existence of risk factors but highlighted that bedbugs can be encountered almost anywhere and transported home.

Transport operators, including RATP, the Paris metro operator, have expressed their heightened vigilance. However, there have been no confirmed sightings since an initial suspected incident on line 8 of the metro was reported on Wednesday.

Bedbugs, as defined by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, are flat, blood-feeding parasites that target humans and animals during their sleep. Infestations are prevalent in various parts of the world, especially in places where people sleep, such as mattress seams, bed frames, cracks, and even behind wallpaper.

These insects are often associated with places that see frequent travel, as their slim bodies enable them to hide in luggage and clothing. Interestingly, hygiene is not a determining factor in their presence.

While bedbugs are not known to transmit diseases, they can cause skin irritation.

Those affected by bedbug bites are advised to wash their clothing and fabrics at high temperatures and seek pest control services for their homes.

France’s struggle with bedbugs is not a new one. These pests were more common in the country before they virtually disappeared in the 1950s. However, the increase in global travel accessibility led to a resurgence in the 1990s.

Three years ago, the government initiated efforts to combat bedbugs, which included an informational website and a telephone hotline to address the growing infestation.

By last year, the French government agency ANSES reported that 11% of French households had encountered bedbugs between 2017 and 2022, with no specific link to wealth.
