Many pro-choice have turned to Biden for amendments for the overturning of Roe v. Wade; this is his response.
The Democrats lack the numbers to override the parliamentary filibuster and approve abortion rights legislation. However, Biden said that the party should instead focus on picking up Senate seats in the November elections.
His remarks came in the wake of Democratic Party senators advocating for a change to filibuster rules, which now need 60 votes to terminate discussions on most bills.
Such an approach would allow legislators to enact legislation codifying Roe v. Wade, the abortion precedent that the Supreme Court rejected last week (a 5-4 decision).
“Congress will have to act to codify Roe into federal law,” Biden said during a virtual discussion on reproductive rights with Democratic governors on Friday.
Even while the filibuster should not stand in the way, “we don’t have the votes to reform the filibuster in the Senate,” said Biden. As a result, the Senate is short two votes.
Right now, the Senate is split 50/50 between Republicans and Democrats.
Two Democratic senators who have previously indicated opposition to modifying the filibuster rules met with White House staffers on Thursday and allegedly restated their positions reports the Hill.com.
If Republicans take control of Congress and the Senate in the November midterm elections, as Biden predicted during his meeting with governors, they will try to outlaw abortion nationally.
After November, “this is going to go anyway,” stated the president.
Rep. Ken Buck, R-Colo., told Newsmax presenter Bianca de la Garza on Friday that Democrats realize that abortion rights will not be a slam-dunk issue with Americans in November, given that a Rasmussen survey indicates that half of the country supports the recent Supreme Court judgments.
Since abortion is so widely despised, Democrats are afraid to mention the word ‘abortion.’ Despite this, they’re utilizing it to prepare the public for the November elections. During an appearance on American Agenda, Buck declared, “It’s their one issue.”
“The Dobbs ruling (6-3 vote) empowers the state legislatures to make decisions,” Buck stated. A legislative body and a decision-making body should both be based there.
Invading the abortion debate and promising a ‘one size fits all solution is wrong. In their hearts, the Democratic Party knows it is wrong. They realize it’s not going over well. As Buck put it, “They’re going to try to get their base fired up.”
On Friday, President Joe Biden met with nine Democrat governors, including Kathy Hochul of the Empire State, Michelle Lujan Grisham of New Mexico, and Roy Cooper of North Carolina, to discuss the importance of protecting abortion access in their respective states.
Hochul cited one example of her proposals to codify abortion rights in the state’s constitution and shield providers and women from out-of-state lawsuits.
According to New York’s gubernatorial candidate, Christine Hochul, President Joe Biden could do more with his executive powers, such as using government facilities like Veterans Affairs hospitals to provide abortion services.
Providing better healthcare should be the focus of the government and other conservatives, not illegalizing abortion and keeping women out of their rights.
It is clear that Biden does not care about the issue and just wants to focus on winning the midterm election.
