China Accused of Interfering in Pandemic Probes

The chair of the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic is calling on the Chinese government to make scientists and military personnel available to provide testimony regarding the causes of the COVID-19 pandemic, as reported by The Hill on Monday.

In a letter to Qin Gang, the ambassador of China to the United States, Rep. Brad Wenstrup, R-Ohio criticized the Chinese embassy as it seems like they want to “interfere” with the committee’s investigation into the causes of the pandemic.

The controversy arose after Li Xiang, a counselor with the Chinese embassy, wrote a message to the committee members on April 14.

In the letter, Beijing indicated its opposition to a House hearing that focused on the efforts of the intelligence community to find out the history of COVID-19.

China has lately issued additional complaints to House legislators.

“Beijing’s “interference is unacceptable and will not impede the Select Subcommittee’s efforts. We encourage you to cease and, instead, cooperate with the numerous international investigations into the origins of COVID-19,” as Wenstrup wrote in his letter.

In addition, the committee’s chair emphasized that if China continues their persistent refusal to cooperate, it will be harder for the world to identify, protect, and prepare for the next pandemic, not to mention the fact that it will undermine efforts to foster “international solidarity.”

According to The Hill, Chinese officials dismissed the idea that the pandemic, which was originally discovered in late 2019 in Wuhan, may have originated from a laboratory in the city that was investigating coronavirus.

Moreover, the confirmation of the laboratory leak speculation, according to Sen. Susan Collins of Maine, would “have an impact” on US policy. She is confused as to why there has been an effort to refute that origin hypothesis. She thinks that the general audience has to be aware of the source. She also added that China’s attempt to hinder the investigation made it harder for the government to find a solution to the pandemic.

However, the US intelligence agency stated in a disclosed report made public in 2021 that agencies see two plausible possibilities — first, the virus started as a laboratory-associated incident and second, a natural exposure to an infected animal.
