Montana airport calls the police on Senator Ted Cruz after reportedly getting into a heated argument with airline staff on Sunday.
A video posted on Reddit showed Cruz speaking to two United Airlines staffers at Bozeman Airport after he missed the check-in window for his flight and was told it was too busy to re-book a flight.
The Reddit user who posted the video claimed that Cruz “wouldn’t calm down” while talking to the two female airline employees.
According to the Daily Mail, police had to be called in to help defuse the situation and confirmed that “re-booking options were limited out of Bozeman due to Spring Break.”
“One of our Public Safety Officers (PSO) was in the ticket lobby and was asked to assist with a frustrated passenger at the United ticket counter (which is not unusual),” said Bozeman airport deputy director Scott Humphrey.
Humphrey also said that Cruz managed to rebook and depart later that evening once they were able to show him other travel options.
“Once travel options were explained to the passenger, he was rebooked and departed Bozeman later that evening. Our PSO didn’t realize he was dealing with Senator Cruz until after the fact. If you need more information, please contact United Airlines,” Humphrey said.
The senator was due back in Washington on Monday for the Senate Judiciary Committee’s multi-day confirmation hearings for Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, President Joe Biden’s Supreme Court nominee.
It is unclear why Cruz was in Bozeman for the weekend but some media outlets noted that the city frequently hosts GOP fundraisers and other events.
Reporters have reached out to Cruz’s camp for comment but have not returned requests.
This comes after his infamous escape attempt to Cancun, Mexico last year as millions of Texans were suffering due to the deadly power crisis in his home state.
Cruz received severe backlash, which prompted the senator to release a statement claiming he flew to Mexico to be a “good dad” to his daughters and would be returning the day after.
“Ted Cruz is flipping out in a Montana airport, probably because he’s not in Cancun’s more spacious, warm airport,” journalist and political commentator Grant Stern tweeted on Monday.
