Liberals are calling for the impeachment of Justice Clarence Thomas following the historic abortion ruling in the “Roe v. Wade” case last Friday.
A viral petition urging Thomas to be impeached has reached over 700,000 signatures over the last few days.
It was created by the public policy advocacy group MoveOn in response to the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn “Roe v. Wade.”
“The right-wing rigged Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last week, effectively taking away the right to privacy and bodily autonomy that’s been considered legal precedent for the past 50 years,” the petition read.
“Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas— who sided with the majority on overturning Roe— made it clear what’s next: to overturn high court rulings that establish gay rights and contraception rights,” the description continued.
This is in reference to Thomas’s concurring opinion where he said that the high court should reconsider overturning “Griswold v. Connecticut,” “Lawrence v. Texas,” and “Obergefell v. Hodges.”
“We have a duty to ‘correct the error’ established in those precedents,” he said following the Supreme Court’s decision last week. “After overruling these demonstrably erroneous decisions, the question would remain whether other constitutional provisions guarantee the myriad rights that our substantive due process cases have generated.”
This comes amid reports that his wife, Ginni Thomas, refused to testify for the January 6 committee investigating the Capitol riot, which is also an issue the petition has raised.
“It has become clear that his wife—longtime conservative activist Ginni Thomas—was actively urging the White House to overturn election results both leading up to January 6 and after the deadly insurrection,” stated in the petition. “Thomas’s failure to recuse himself warrants immediate investigation and heightened alarm.
Ginni’s lawyer, Mark Paoletta, told the panel that she doesn’t believe there is any need for her to speak to the committee.
“I do not understand the need to speak with Mrs. Thomas. Before I can recommend that she meet with you, I am asking the Committee to provide a better justification for why Mrs. Thomas’s testimony is relevant to the Committee’s legislative purpose,” Paoletta said in a letter obtained by the New York Times.
