The planned destruction of Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge has been put on hold because of bad weather. For weeks, crews have been getting ready to use explosives to break up the last big piece.
The 600-ton metal piece is still on top of the Dali, the ship that lost power and hit the bridge. Because of the trash that was left behind, the port of Baltimore has been closed since the events.
The supposed demolition had to be put off because of lightning in the area at the time it was meant to happen.
Six crew members died when the building collapsed in March. The last body was only found last week. All of the members were Latino immigrants who came to the U.S. to find work. They were filling in gaps in the middle of the night when the accident happened.
The Dali will be able to float back up and be taken out of the water after the rubble is taken apart. This would make it possible for the water trade through the Baltimore port to keep going as usual. There are a lot of longshoremen, small business owners, and truckers in the area who really want the port to open again.
The people who work on the Dali are supposed to stay on board while the bombs go off. A spokesperson said that they would take cover in a safe place and that “all precautions are being taken to ensure everyone’s safety.”
The best way to get rid of steel that is under a lot of tension and pressure is to use explosives to destroy it. With “precision cuts,” the team has been practicing how to control how the trusses break down. This will give them a little more power once the explosives are set off.
It has been moved to later this week during high tide, and three or four tugboats will be used to help the ship get to a close terminal.
