After the intention of voting on a law that prohibits politicians from buying and selling stocks was postponed, a Democrat from Virginia demanded new leadership in her party.
Abigail Spanberger (D-VA) criticized the Democratic Party for using “delay tactics” in order to prevent members of Congress, their wives, and their dependent children from purchasing, selling, and trading individual stocks.
The bill that would forbid politicians from trading stocks this week, according to House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md. ), “probably” won’t be subjected to a vote. The bill wouldn’t be approved before Congress goes for its pre-midterm campaigning in 2022 due to the delay.
On Tuesday evening, the proposal for the “Combatting Financial Conflicts of Interest in Government Act” was made public. In February, Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) was asked by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.)
Pelosi, meanwhile, laughed at a reporter who questioned whether or not congressmen and their wives need to be prohibited from trading stocks starting in December 2021. “This is a free market and individuals—we are a free market economy.”
They should be able to engage in that, “Pelosi said in defense of Congress members who trade stocks.”
The lack of movement by her party on legislation that would forbid parliamentarians from potentially benefitting from having access to information that some have compared to “insider trading” infuriated Spanberger.
To forbid congressional members and their families from trading stocks, Spanberger proposed her “Transparent Representation Upholding Service and Trust (TRUST) in Congress Act” on January 15, 2021. According to Spanberger, her measure had backing from both parties.
In response to Spanberger’s criticizing the Democratic Party’s leadership during a press briefing on Friday, Pelosi said, “Her bill is in the bill. Others had ideas too, and that’s what the committee put out. But it’s excellent publicity because you posed a question. “
Spanberger has already attacked her own party, so this is nothing new.
Spanberger criticized progressive Democrats in November 2020 for promoting socialism and the defunding of the police program before the 2020 elections.
According to her, we will be completely destroyed in 2022 if we participate in this race once more.
Spanberger spoke on Fox News in June and stated that she did not wish for President Joe Biden to assist her in her electoral campaign.
