Dr. Fauci’s Replacement Has Been Selected, And She’s Even More Controversial

Federal officials recently announced that Dr. Jeanne Marrazzo will become the new director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), replacing Dr. Anthony Fauci.

Dr. Marrazzo is currently the director of the Division of Infectious Diseases at UAB. She gained visibility during the COVID-19 pandemic with her appearances in the media. She joined UAB in 2016, coming from the University of Washington. Dr. Marrazzo is an expert in sexually transmitted infections, including HIV.

Following the announcement, Dr. Lawrence Tabak, acting director for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), expressed excitement about Dr. Marrazzo’s appointment.

He praised her experience in leading clinical trials and research, managing large budgets, and mentoring professionals in their careers.

“Dr. Marrazzo brings a wealth of leadership experience from leading international clinical trials and translational research, managing a complex organizational budget that includes research funding and mentoring trainees in all stages of professional development,” Dr. Tabak claimed.

“I look forward to welcoming Dr. Marrazzo to the NIH leadership team.” Tabak added.

Dr. Anthony Fauci served as NIAID director for almost four decades, retiring in 2022. He skillfully navigated the agency through major health crises like the AIDS/HIV epidemic and the COVID-19 pandemic, earning nationwide recognition as a medical expert.

However, he also faced opposition from AIDS activists in the 80s and 90s, as well as from those against COVID and vaccine mandates during the pandemic.

Dr. Marrazzo will assume her new role in the fall of 2023. As NIAID director, she will oversee a $6.3 billion budget allocated for research into innovative treatments for infectious diseases and allergies.

NIAID conducts extensive research and tracks disease outbreaks both in the United States and internationally, with 21 laboratories, including the Vaccine Research Center.

Furthermore, in 2021, Dr. Marrazzo warned about Covid-19

“Please consider wearing a mask when you go out,” Marrazzo said, “You don’t need to wear one when you’re at home. Masks in young people going to school over the age of six. All the things we’ve been talking about, mask, wearing, hand hygiene, and social distancing.”

“Masks have contributed to the control of this pandemic in other communities,” she continued. “Even mask wearing, except when you’re eating, you can prevent it with very good masks. Three basic rules. Wear a mask. Make sure you wash your hands frequently or use hand sanitizer and keep your distance.”
