El Paso Businesswoman Begs Biden To Secure The Border

A businesswoman in the border city of El Paso pleaded with President Biden to secure the southern border in an interview with MSNBC. The city is one of several border towns where a state of emergency was declared before Title 42 expired later this month, which is expected to accelerate the already massive influx of immigrants. “I’ve lived here for more than 38 years and I’ve never seen anything like it in El Paso,” businesswoman Claudia Rodríguez told MSNBC. “This is unsustainable, this is not normal, please just help our politics.”

MSNBC reporter Gabe Gutierrez showed pictures of the hundreds of migrants currently roaming El Paso, adding that many are sleeping on the streets. “There is a large crowd of migrants gathered there who has just called for paramedics because one of the migrants apparently suffered a medical episode after sleeping here overnight,” Gutierrez said.

“This is quite incredible. I was here several months ago, but the number of immigrants here is significantly higher. It’s not just this block, it goes on for blocks and blocks,” she said as she looked out at the massive crowd. The end of Title 42, a Trump-era immigration policy that allowed federal health authorities to deny entry to asylum seekers to stop the spread of communicable diseases, will expire on May 11.

El Paso Mayor Oscar Leeser said about 1,000 illegal immigrants arrive at the border every day, citing local data. The officials provide that from 10,000 to 12,000 migrants will try to look for asylum on the border on May 11 and the volume should increase.

In response to the expected increase, President Biden authorized the deployment of 1,500 troops along the southern border. The troops will perform administrative and transportation duties for at least 90 days in order to provide relief to U.S. Customs and Border Patrol.
