A video that Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, recently posted shows what a new life-sized robot he’s been working on called Optimus can do.
There was a video shared by Elon Musk on Wednesday with the words “Going for a walk with Optimus.” A robot about the size of a person walks slowly and in ways that look like people. We’ve seen Optimus before. Elon Musk shared on X before this one a video of this robot folding a shirt.
His previous statement about building and designing this robot was that the objective is to make it “capable of performing tasks that are unsafe, repetitive, or boring.” There is a lot of debate about these robots, and different people have different thoughts on them.
Some people are excited to see what robots can do and how they can fit in with society, but others are not at all interested. A lot of people replied to Elon Musk’s tweet, and many of them were scared and worried about this new robot.
Someone replied to Musk’s video, “HAS NO ONE SEEN THE MOVIE IROBOT?!?” “Kill it with fire” was another answer. A lot of people said these robots weren’t needed and would probably only cause problems in the future.
While this was going on, some people made jokes about the computer and how it was walking. Some said it was like Vice President Joe Biden and said, “Optimus already walks faster than the leader of the free world” and “Already outpaces Biden.”
Elon Musk showed off the Optimus robot for the first time at Tesla’s Artificial Intelligence Day in August 2021. At this point, Musk called the machine “The Tesla Bot.” After that, the company came out with its newest robot, which they named Optimus Gen 2.
Optimus Gen 2 is a life-sized robot that is 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighs 122 pounds. It can run at a speed of 5 miles per hour. At an event in October 2022, Musk talked about this Gen 2 robot. He wants to sell these robots to the public for about $20,000 each and make millions of them. Musk said at the time, “Optimus is going to be incredible in 5 or 10 years.” He also said that there was a lot of work to be done.
Bots and what they can do on Earth and in other places have been talked about a lot in the past few years. One of the people who started the AI study lab Midjourney, David Holz, has high hopes for these robots. “We should expect a billion humanoid robots on earth in the 2040s and a hundred billion (mostly alien) robots all over the solar system in the 2060s,” he said. “Probably something like that,” Elon Musk replied, “as long as the foundations of civilization are stable.”
