EU to put sanctions on Chinese companies that help Russia

The European Union wants to sanction Chinese companies that they think have helped Russia of late. To lessen the help from Russia, they want to put in place sanctions that would hit companies in mainland China.

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the 27-member EU group decided on a set of penalties that they could use against the country. “Chinese companies and entities from other third countries that help Russia get around sanctions” will be included in the next set of actions against Russia for its continued attacks on Ukraine.

Russia’s loss is also in the business world. Because of sanctions, its economy is no longer connected to new technologies and ideas. “Russia is now dependent on China,” said the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. People say that three big companies are sending money to Russia and will be punished for this.

According to data provided by China’s General Administration of Customs in January, the two countries’ trade reached an all-time high of $240 billion in 2023. The numbers show that Russia has bought more cars and smartphones from China. This means that Russia is still getting technology from the West, even though sanctions are still in place. China, Hong Kong, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates have all helped Russia in particular.

A lot of work has been done quickly to put sanctions in place and make Russia less dependent on Beijing and China for help, technology, and other things that could help them win the war.
