The cause of death for former child actor Adam Rich, known as “America’s little brother” for his role in the TV show “Eight is Enough,” has been determined to be the effects of fentanyl.
The Los Angeles County Medical-Examiner Coroner’s office ruled his death as accidental, according to an autopsy report. Rich passed away at the age of 54 in his Los Angeles home in January.
In a statement, Rich’s publicist Danny Deraney fondly remembered him as a “wonderful guy” and emphasized his status as America’s little brother.
“He was kind, generous and a warrior in the fight against mental illness,” Deraney said. “Adam did not have an ounce of ego. He was unselfish and always looked out for those he cared about. Which is why many people who grew up with him feel a part of their childhood gone, and sad today.”
Rich rose to stardom at the young age of eight, captivating audiences with his portrayal of the mop-topped son in ABC’s “Eight is Enough.” Following the show’s run from 1977 to 1981, Rich’s acting career was limited.

Prior to his death, Rich had openly discussed his struggles with depression and substance abuse.
In October, he shared on Twitter that he had been sober for seven years, overcoming numerous arrests, multiple rehab stays, and several overdoses. He encouraged his followers to persevere and never give up.
Throughout his life, Rich faced legal troubles related to his substance abuse issues.
In April 1991, he was arrested for attempting to break into a pharmacy, and later that year, he was accused of stealing a drug-filled syringe from a hospital while receiving treatment for a dislocated shoulder.
In 2002, he was arrested for driving under the influence after colliding with a parked California Highway Patrol cruiser in a closed freeway lane.
Rich’s struggles with addiction and his subsequent efforts to maintain sobriety shed light on the challenges many individuals face in overcoming substance abuse. His public disclosure of his journey aimed to inspire others to persevere in their own battles.
The tragic passing of Adam Rich serves as a reminder of the complexities and difficulties that can accompany fame at a young age. It also underscores the importance of addressing mental health and addiction issues with compassion and support, as they can impact individuals from all walks of life.
