After nearly four decades on the run, authorities in California have apprehended a fugitive from Florida in connection with a 1984 murder case. Donald Michael Santini was arrested by San Diego authorities on June 7, in relation to the killing of Cynthia Ruth Wood, whose body was discovered in a drainage ditch in Hillsborough County, Florida.
According to reports, Wood, a 33-year-old woman, had been strangled to death. The medical examiner confirmed the cause of death and found Santini’s fingerprints on her body, as reported by the Tampa Bay Times. Santini had been the last person seen leaving Wood’s residence on that fateful day in 1984, and her body was found on June 9 of the same year.
“The suspect has not been seen since this incident and may be in the state of Texas using an unknown identity,” the sheriff’s office said, adding that Santini was a suspect in the 39-year-old cold case.
Santini had evaded capture and disappeared following the incident, leading authorities to list him as a suspect in the unsolved homicide case on their “Unsolved Homicides” page, speculating that he may have assumed a new identity and possibly relocated to Texas. The case remained cold for 39 years, until recent advancements in technology provided detectives with the means to revisit the evidence.
Living in California under an assumed name, Santini managed to avoid detection until his recent arrest. Over the years, he had gone by various aliases, including Charles Michael Stevens, Donald Chapman, and John Trimble, as stated in an arrest warrant obtained by local outlet WFLA. The warrant also revealed that Santini’s fingerprints matched those found on Wood’s body, further strengthening the case against him.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office expressed gratitude for the advancements in technology that enabled the reopening of the case, stating that Santini’s arrest would allow them to reexamine the evidence collected in 1984 using modern techniques. The arrest brings new hope to solving a cold case that had remained unsolved for almost four decades.
Santini made an appearance in San Diego County Court on June 9, and he currently awaits extradition to Florida to face charges related to the murder of Cynthia Ruth Wood. As the legal process unfolds, authorities will continue their efforts to bring justice to the victim and provide closure to her family and loved ones.
