The new movie Oppenheimer won awards at the 2024 Oscars, but it also showed how dangerous it is to be near a nuclear site. This has led to a new call for help for people who are near a nuclear plant.
The movie Oppenheimer was based on the event known as the Trinity Test, which was the start of the nuclear age. Now, there is a new focus on Capitol Hill on the people who are touched by nuclear power and testing in the United States.
There is one family, Tina Cordova’s, that has dealt with the effects of living near a nuclear plant, such as getting cancer from the radiation. Cordova was 39 years old when she was told she had thyroid cancer. She said she wasn’t surprised and knew right away that it had something to do with the nuclear plant. She said, “We don’t ask if we’re going to get cancer; we ask when it’s going to be our turn.”
Some families who have been hurt by the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act have been given money by the government since 1990, but worries have been raised about how to pay for the program. The Senate did, however, just agree to fund the program for another five years.
Senate President Josh Hawley of Missouri said, “This is about doing basic justice by the working people of this nation, whom their own government has poisoned.” Hawley said that St. Louis has had a lot of cancer cases and that the area is still influenced by the processing of radioactive waste from World War II.
Many politicians were against the program because they thought it would cost too much, but some pushed for it and said that the characters in Oppenheimer were like real people who are dealing with the effects of radioactive materials.
Biden has said that he feels good about the plan and will sign it if it is approved and sent to him.
