Experts say that the rise in inflation is slowing down, but many people are still seeing very expensive food prices. And this is where shoppers feel the heat of the economy. But there may be good news for many.
“Food prices went through the roof during the pandemic, and in many cases, they’ve kept going up even though the pandemic is over,” said Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren. She went on to talk about how upset people are when they see that prices change from week to week.
Some items, like cereal, don’t have the same number of serves but still cost the same or more, which is a problem for some people. Many people have seen this since the pandemic. It’s called “shrinkflation.”
“Good old-fashioned corporate price gouging” is to blame, Warren said, explaining why food prices are going up. “And because only a few companies control every level of the food chain, they can charge really high prices,” she said.
Officials like Senator John Kennedy said that inflation was caused by the government spending too much money under Joe Biden’s leadership. They said, “When you spend this much money, you’re going to have inflation.”
“Prices are still high, but inflation is going down,” said Mark Hamrick, a senior economic expert at Bankrate. As long as prices are high, it will be hard for people to pay to buy things.
There are some people who think that these prices will start to go down or even out when it comes to things like food. But some people are still having trouble paying their food bills because the prices are too high.
Some companies are planning to do more to make food more cheap in order to fight this. Target’s release of 5,000 items at cheaper prices to attract people from low-income homes is an example of this.
