Illegal Immigrants Crossing Border Wall Increases to Unimagined Numbers

Illegal border crossings are skyrocketing as repairs for Trump’s border wall are delayed and border patrol can’t keep up. The current border wall is made of tall metal beams, and those that require repairs are marked with dates for when the repair should be taking place.

However, the repairs haven’t been taking place, and there are multiple areas throughout the border where immigrants can slip through. Some of the beams are weak making them easy to move and allowing room for larger groups to come in at a time.

The number of immigrants entering cannot be kept up even with shorter processing times and the increased effectiveness of the border patrol teams.

Lukeville, Arizona is just one rural place that is getting overrun by immigrants due to the border. Chaotic scenes can be seen while immigrants are coming into the United States through Mexico. Many immigrants are traveling with full families or are women and children coming to reunite with other family members, which is much different than previous years where immigrants were mostly adult men.

The increased number of immigrants has been a cause for concern and has pushed Congressional Democrats to entertain the idea of limiting asylum for immigrants as a part of a deal with the Republicans for Ukraine aid.

Border patrol can’t keep up with the influx of immigrants nor can they keep up with the necessary repairs needed for Trump’s border patrol wall. They say that it can take an hour just to drive up the wall to discover breaches through it.

“Our officers and agents are responding to large groups of migrants, which means that some of our agents aren’t on the line, not really monitoring for some of those cuts,” said Troy Miller, US Customs and Border Protection’s acting commissioner. “If we don’t have anybody to respond, then you’re going to see what you’re seeing.”

The amount of people coming in cannot be controlled and border control agents are moving immigrants through processing as quickly and effectively as they can. With this comes the issue of rising immigration cases. As of right now, the cases for immigrants are over 3 million and they will continue climbing as more immigrants come through the border.

The higher screening standard can help the process, but it’s not necessarily going to take place immediately. Discussions in Congress could bring up the most significant immigration legislation since 1996.
