It wasn’t a surprise that an Ivy League university added an AI major to their school. AI is becoming more popular, and many people are spending in and researching it.
Penn State University just got the word out that they are adding a new major. It will be called the Bachelor of Science in Engineering in Artificial Intelligence. The school should start in time for the fall semester of 2024.
People who major in artificial intelligence should be able to get good jobs in that field after they finish. Now that AI is becoming more popular and experts see it as a possible tool, career, and business, many schools have added AI as a major or course.
For now, the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon and the College of Science at Purdue are the only other schools that offer an AI course or study. You can also take AI studies and program at Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Director of the AI program George Pappas said, “Starting a separate AI program shows our dedication to preparing students to be leaders in engineering in the 21st century.” This school will help students become AI leaders as quickly as possible so that they can solve problems in society as soon as possible.
Penn’s website says the program will have 5 different “concentrations,” or areas of interest, so students can pick a certain area of AI to study. There are 5 “concentrations”: health/systems, vision/language, machine learning, and robots.
Since these programs have been put in place, tech and political leaders have spoken out saying that they need to be taught in an honest way because AI has become popular for the wrong reasons, like with deepfakes and spreading false information.
Penn State also said it would try to add AI to many of its other programs because they think it will have a bigger effect and give more students access to it.
