Iconic English actor Michael Caine admits that “he won’t be here” following the release of his latest film.
During an interview with Fane’s Matthew d’Anconaon, Caine spoke about his new book, “Deadly Game,” as well as his new film, “The Great Escaper.”
“I have two grandsons – one is 14 and one is 15. If you talk to them, you’d think they’re 20 and 21,” the 90-year-old actor lamented. “They’re so advanced it’s fabulous. I think the younger generation are much smarter than my lot.”
He was then asked whether he was excited for the younger generation to create a “new and exciting world.”
“Oh my god, yeah. I won’t be here to see it, but I’ll watch it from upstairs,” Cained said, who is playing real-life World War II veteran Bernie Jordan in his supposed final film.
In a separate interview with the BBC, Caine looked back at his career and explained why he decided to retire from the film industry.
“The only parts I’m liable to get now are 90-year-old men. Or maybe 85,” he joked to presenter Martha Kearney. “They’re not going to be the lead. You don’t have leading men at 90, you’re going to have young handsome boys and girls.”
“So I thought, I might as well leave with all this,” Caine added, whose credits include “The Italian Job,” the “Dark Knight” trilogy, and “Kingsman: Secret Service.”
He also recalled a particular role he considered after working on “The Great Escaper,” which later led to his decision to retire.
“I was sent a script actually, and I looked at it, and then I did something I’ve never done before. I counted how many pages I had, compared to the number of pages in the script,” he explained. “And it was 15 [pages of dialogue] in a script which was 99 pages. And I thought, I think that counts as a small part, I’m not doing it. So I retired.”
“I thought, I’m ahead here, I may do a little part and get a bad review… so I thought, why not leave now? So I’ve left,” Caine said.
