McCarthy’s Challenger Calls For House Censure

Republican California Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s challenger is challenging calls to censure him for refusing to release Jan. 6 surveillance footage to the public.

David Giglio, a MAGA Republican who is running against McCarthy in California’s 20th Congressional District, called on House Republicans to censure the former speaker for not releasing Jan. 6 footage.

“Kevin McCarthy, despite claiming doing so would be too dangerous, could have kept his promise to release the footage to the American people,” Giglio said in a press release posted on the social media platform X. “Doing so could have dismantled the Democrats’ narrative and ended the DOJ’s Stalin-esque witch hunt nearly a year ago.”

Giglio added that the California lawmaker  keeping the recordings private permitted the “Department of Justice and the FBI to operate with unchecked authority, akin to the Gestapo,” and incarcerate “individuals without due process and subjecting them to Third World show trials in front of radical activist judges and tainted DC juries.”

Just days after he was elected House Speaker in January, McCarthy vowed that he would be willing to share private surveillance footage from the Capitol riot on January 6.

But questions were raised about his motivation when he gave then-Fox News anchor Tucker Carlson access to more than 40,000 hours of uncut surveillance footage in February.

Carlson, who was fired from the network in April, repeatedly downplayed the insurrection, depicting the deadly riot as “mostly peaceful chaos” when he first aired part of the footage.

“I said at the very beginning, transparency. And so what I wanted to produce for everybody is exactly what I said. The people could actually look at it and see what’s gone on that day,” McCarthy told reporters at a March press conference, saying that he did not regret sharing the footage with Carlson.

Giglio, meanwhile, has been using McCarthy’s downfall to promote his platform in hopes of unseating the former House Speaker.

“McCarthy appears to have forgotten not only his Republican affiliation but also the historical context of California joining the United States,” the congressional hopeful said on his website.

“The need to replace outdated career politicians losing cognitive abilities is becoming evident. Kevin McCarthy has consistently demonstrated his unsuitability for Congress, and it’s time to drain the Washington swamp,” it continued.
