New Plan to Help with the FAFSA: “Too Late?”

A “FAFSA College Support Strategy” was announced by the US Department of Education on Monday. However, it is being criticized because many people think it’s too late.

This support plan will help process the new Free Application for Federal Student Aid forms by providing money, extra staff, and general support. In the end, this was pushed back a long way because of many problems, but the Department of Education is still moving forward. And Miguel Cardona, the U.S. Secretary of Education, said, “We are going to make this right.” We will and must do it.”

There has been some pushback from people in charge of financial help, who say this program is “too little, too late.” The plan will help make sure that federal experts in institutions with a lot of needs have the tools they need to process data. There will also be a tool that can help you answer questions that colleges have about the new form that is being put in place.

Financial aid has helped a lot of students and parents in the past. In fact, a lot of students decide which college to attend based on how much financial help, scholarships, and grants they can get.

It is said that only 3.6 million students filled out the FAFSA this year, while the normal number of students who did so has been around 17 million in the past.

Mark Kantrowitz, an expert on higher education, said, “While 3.6 million FAFSAs have been sent in, that is half the number that were sent in and processed by the same time last year.”

Because of the delay, many parents of college students are having a hard time making a choice. They are waiting for the FAFSA to start working so they can see how much money they will get in grants and then make a decision. It’s still not possible to fill out and sign the form properly.

To help people get FSA IDs, the most important thing the U.S. Department of Education can do is fix the bugs. “Friends and family can’t file the FAFSA if someone can’t get an FSA ID to electronically sign the form,” Kantrowitz said.
