Over the past few months, the region with the highest number of encounters with migrants has been the southern border of the United States. At the US Southern Border, there were more than 300,000 interactions with migrants in December alone.
When the number of migrants was stable and much smaller than it is now, it seemed unimaginable that there would be this many meetings with migrants. This is the largest sum ever documented for a particular month.
Since October 1st, there have been 785,000 contacts in total, which is again the most in any quarter ever.
The debate over this problem is still going strong; some say policyholders are to fault, while others argue that additional funds and resources are all that’s needed to bring it under control.
Secaucus, New Jersey Mayor Michael Gonneli reported that migrant buses had stopped at his train stations en route to New York City in an effort to circumvent immigration laws.
In a statement, Gnnolli stated, “It appears that the bus operators are evading the executive order’s requirements by dropping migrants off at the Secaucus train station and allowing them to continue to their final destination.”
Several mayors, including the mayor of New Jersey, have reported witnessing busloads of migrants entering or leaving their city. Both border security and the people living in the cities these migrants are passing through are having difficulties as a result of the increase in migration.
The purpose of the joint statement from President Andres Manuel Lopez, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, and others was to “disrupt human smuggling” while maintaining “humane, orderly, and regular migration.”
They also talked about initiatives aimed at protecting potential immigrants already in the country, such DACA, Obama’s initiative that assisted children of immigrants already residing in the country.
